- WHICH great challenges and social problems should the EVOKE Network tackle next?
I think that government corruption/malfeasance is a huge issue…

The indigenous knowledge project I reviewed was Viable institutional innovations with respect to community based natural resource management in developing and transitional economies which can be found here

They were able to regain local control over their food choices. The power of a central government often can mean…

The article I chose was

A national initiative sounded like a good thing but in the same article it pointed out facts so shocking that I had to question any claims of…

This section was just filled with interesting findings by those working in the field. The idea that denial plays a huge role was something I just hadn't considered (despite having helped create coursework in risk communication). Peter Sandman (who I have listened to give lectures) gave very interesting guidelines on how to combat denial. Of course the hope is that we never reach the point where people are "shutting down" in order to avoid the problem but if we do cross that line it is crucial…

In an overwhelming pandemic it is key to understand what is going on throughout the impacted area. That is where non-medically trained individuals can be key. Triage and verification are key aspects which can be handled by people with just in time training. We can also harness the amazing sophistication of systems like netflix to ensure that we can deliver webcams to patients who need to have further evaluation but lack imaging capacity.
Area 1: Triage
Individuals who are willing…

A new branch of the World Bank of Chicken opened in Zimbabwe. A country that has been thrown into utter chaos by hyperinflation. This is the third branch of the revolutionary international bank. The bank stores most of its funds in chickens around the world and has them insured so that even in case of epidemic depositors can still redeem their currency for chickens. Indeed while money may not grow on trees, chickens do grow and the bank continues to…

For water day EVOKE has decided to most of the communities a chance to see just what percentage of water is drinkable and what percentage falls into various categories such as tainted by manufacturing, agricultural waste etc an entire rainbow worth of different important categories.
On World Water Day - people around the world will wake up to articles about how major bodies of water have suddenly become rainbow colored. By adding special (entirely safe) dyes to the water whenever…

We have finally done it, we have turned the tide of the world towards a better future. Now each year will bring more forests, and more biodiversity. We had to reach up into the heavens to solve what we had wrought here on Earth. Now that we have solar energy beaming down from space based panels we are able to sustainably travel, grow crops, and clean up the environment. Hydroponics helped to tame our incessant need for more land which depleted so much of the world's surface. Now a tiny fraction…

The meal is simple - a lightly seared farm grown bass with a side of vegetables from my backyard. The ecosystem it comes from is perfectly balanced to both feed nature and the fish I am eating. Its inspiration was the bass referenced in Dan Barber's TED talk and that idea went on to create fish farms that were ecologically sound all over the world. I biked over to my local farm and picked up 4 freshly caught fish for my family. The taste is so pure and the vegetables from my backyard seem so…

What is life like in 2020 for the girls and women you helped empower in 2010?
So how has “Educating 80 Girls and Orphans in Kenya” impacted one of their worlds?
Life was horrible as an orphan with nothing and no resources to help me, but now I have opportunity. The lack of any hope and light in my life was profound but this project brought both. Seeing the amazing impact of education, food, and water in my young life was amazing. To be able to learn to read, to be able to do…

So you want to know what it was like when I was a child? Back when mankind hadn't "decided" what was right at every level of the ecosystem (if you can even call it a system its more like a sloppy programmer's goto loop). Instead of genetically engineered plants that had the best "optimization" characteristics for human exploitation we had whatever nature decided to throw our way (ok we planted crops and such but most of the land wasn't planted).
Why we had to go and take out weeds -…

I live in the Minneapolis area, we have a convergence of a number of factors which could lead to a public health emergency, we have international travel, various immigrant populaces with limited English skills and healthcare access, and high population density (we recognize our immigrant health aspect as a concern area as a state and are working on it…

For me the application of nanotechnology to ensure that water is purified qualifies as my favorite approach. While endless pollution issues exist watching someone safely drink water that just moments before would have harmed them greatly seems is a wonderful leap.
The ted demonstration is of course in mind but I think that even more adaptions are possible including the potential to clean up existing bodies of water that have far too much contamination. Imagine putting a filter across a…

I believe that by using energy units as a universal currency we could help to revalue what we use. This would allow us to set values for particular types of energy based around a host of different criteria and apply them equally around the world.
The article below gives a bit of the rationale but I think we should go further. If we wish to lower the value of fossil fuels we merely add a multiplier to clean fuels which makes them more valuable (or we add a "environment tax" to the…

When I read about this I was very intrigued. We know the difficulties in getting wind power projects approved due to the high costs and difficulty getting the power to the places it needs to be consumed. This idea helps to avoid that by harnessing large amounts of energy from the air over our heads.
This quote sums up the potential:
""If we were able to tap 1% of the wind energy at high altitude, that
would be enough to supply all the world's energy needs," says David Shepard,…

The idea of helping someone to be more secure in their food sounded great. A home garden works out well. The person I have targeted is my mother-in-law who has a great desire to eat organically grown food but lives in a condominium which would normally make this impossible. Luckily I live near her and have space so I am helping her to have a garden with lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots to supplement her diet. She has the time and interest whereas I currently don't have the time so this is making…

In 2020 I hope to be coordinating a variety of educational websites dedicated to providing free resources to the world. A site like
www.ineedapencil.com was very inspirational as it provides high quality SAT preparation resources for free. While I have seen various free educational portals they all seem to be based around lower quality resources or using already existing lectures which were not intended for learning fully outside of a school system;…
