Every year we have at least one big panic. The matter will be made but only by the media to panic. Sure, the media must operate well. So they make their money. Many people are influenced by the media. I wrote about it in an older blog post of mine. An example of a panic would be the dioxin scandal this year. A manufacturer of fats has…

Ushahidi is a great system. In Germany are not many terrible disasters. At least not as bad as for example in Africa. One could for example use of flood in Hamburg or in rivers. In the past, there was already some bad disasters. Many also don't know that we have earthquakes in Germany. Again, this might report it. Currently there is a…

I was kept informed about micro-credit and find that it is a good thing. Often, poor people will not get credits to realize their ideas. This is not only in countries of the third world, but also for example Germany. In Germany, awards the "GLS Bank" these micro-credits. Just because people are poor, it does not mean that they can…

The water in the third world often has a very poor quality and is mixed with bacteria. The bacteria can be killed by chlorine or heat. The working group Eawag (Eidgenössische Anstalt für Wasserversorgung, Abwasserreinigung und Gewässerschutz) has found a simple way how anyone can prepare water at home. This method is called Sodis (http://www.sodis.ch).
The water is poured into a PET bottle and placed just 6 hours in the sun. The UV radiation from the…

I searched for creative ideas to produce electricity. I found something in a Focus Online Article. They report about 3 ideas but they do not have to be taken too seriously.
Why don't we try to produce energy in everyday life? A supermarket in Sainsbury has installed kinetic plates in the parking lots. When a car drives over the plates, energy is created and operates the cash register at the supermarket. Why don't we use these plates on busy streets?
Another idea comes…

The hunger problem in Germany is not spread like in the third world. But there is a problem with hunger, especially in children. More and more families fall below the poverty line. Many families have for the 20th of the month no more money and can't affort nothing more to eat. Especially the children suffer. It comes to malnutrition. Also the poor and unhealthy diet in poor families is a problem.
In contrast to the third world, we can help ourselves. We have social services like Tafel…

Create “transparent” technologies. - I think it's important to create technology for which is not important to be an engineer to understand it. It must be simple but good technology that is easy to learn. It does not help when people get technology that they don't understand.I think it would be better if people work with the simple technology and develope a better one by a learning process. - Learning by doing. So they get self-confidence and also can give their new knowledge to others.
