Causes and management of soil acidification

Acid soils can be naturally occurring, however, a number of agricultural practices have expanded the areas of such soils. Main causal factors include crop offtake of basic ions and use of fertilizers those leave acidic residues. Leaching of nitrate also results soil acidity. Nitrate is infinitely soluble in water and leaches below the root zone at a…

Irrigation induced soil degradation

Non-judicious use of irrigation water irrespective of its quality leads to soil salinization and sodification. Continuous acc**ulation of salts in root zone results into soil salinization. These salts may come from irrigation water, mineral dissolution, precipitation, capillary rise or all of these. The process of sodification…

Soil acidification-A brief

The process of increase in the ratio of hydrogen and aluminum ions in comparison to basic cations within the soil resulting in the adverse effects on root growth and metabolism of plant is called soil acidification. The problem is more prevalent in the uplands. Poor organic matter content of the soil results in low pH buffering…

Capacity building with role play

I was involved in a programme with PRADAN, an NGO of eastern India. We had jointly organized some capacity building programmes. Those gave me an insight that capacity building for farmers is really really tough. Earlier we used to have mainly classroom lectures for farmers and in one day we intended to give them the universe in one day touching…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More
