Celebrating My Sons' College Graduation

In May of 2020, my young sons are graduating from college. We drive to their graduation in our veggie-powered diesel Rabbit, which was built by my friend, the Green Grease Monkey Pat Keaney. On the roof-top of the car are the solar cells that I conceived while playing the Evoke game just 10 years ago--an idea that would not have… Continue

Solar Energy Collection from Our Car Roofs

This idea is a conceptual blend of the "solar backpack" and the car. The solar backpack puts solar panels on a backpack, which allows the collected energy to power up an ipod or cellphone. My idea is to put such solar panels on the rooftop of a car, with a wire running into the car. It could do the same thing: power these mobile devices as well as rechargeable batteries.

Think of how much time our cars spend out… Continue

The Green Grease Monkeys

I met Pat Keaney, founder of the Green Grease Monkey, back when I was working on the campaign of the Green Party candidate for governor of Massachusetts, Jill Stein (who, incidentally, is running again). I've invited Pat to come to our Green Sanctuary Committee's Earth Day Fair at the UU Church, which we've done for the past three years and will… Continue

Eating Dinner On My Vermont Farm

On March 17, 2020, I sit down to eat dinner prepared from food I have raised on the small farm in Vermont we moved to a couple of years ago. The milk is raw, straight from the cows. The meat is from a pig or cow that we raised ourselves and that was slaughtered and stored in our freezer. Vegetables were canned last summer and frozen so that we could get through the winter as best we can using locally grown vegetables.

While we began to think of doing this way back in 2008, when… Continue

Earth Day Fair with local CSAs and Farmers

For my action I will organize an Earth Day Fair on April 18th at the UU Church in Haverhill, MA. We will invite representatives from local CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), CSFs (Community Supported Fisheries), and other local farms so that they can meet the members of our congregation and local community. We did the same last year and managed to increase enrollments in the CSAs.

Sustainability Issues in Farm Industry News article

One of the innovations I investigated projected what farming will be like in 10 years (in 2013). While some of the innovations discussed sounded exciting, others were troubling to me for a number of reasons. I have been studying "ethical eating" as part of the Unitarian Universalist church's "study/action issue," and much of what I… Continue

Learning of Social Innovation

I struggled a little bit with finding one of these that could help *me* change the world...But a couple of them resonated enough, after reading and re-reading, until I could recall an insight I have--a kind of dream of how to make the world a better place.

Here's the idea: it's about setting up an organization that would help people--ideally teens--travel to third-world, developing nations and directly experience the poverty and lack of infrastructure that we take for granted here in… Continue

Shadowing Heroes

I have chosen three to shadow: Kari Saratovsky of Social Citizen, Treehugger and Planetgreen. It took me a while to find these. I didn't want to follow a tweeter that was just an organization.... that's what led me to Kari. She's an individual whose life has been dedicated to this kind of work from the very start of her career.

The other two I chose… Continue

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
