Empowering Women Through Sports: Expanding the Story

I found a couple of ways to expand my initial investigation of empowering women through sports. I found a project on the Global Giving site for giving money to women in Rwanda as well as a story about the same idea in Afghanistan (see my "act6" blog post for links). When I searched for this topic in Google, I came up with the Changemakers profile… Continue

Empowering Women in Rwanda by Training Women Soccer Coaches

I chose the Global Giving project to "Train a 100 football women coaches in Rwanda". I am familiar with the power of sports to keep women out of trouble as a result of seeing a poster in my school declaring the fruits of the Title 9 legislation here in the United States, which required funding to be equally distributed among girls' and boys' sports teams, thereby opening up opportunities… Continue

Microlending at Kiva

I started microlending when my mother-in-law gave her children and grandchildren $25 each to get started on Kiva. I have enjoyed taking time to choose the projects and individuals to support. I have chosen individuals in Africa, as I had taken a trip there back in 2003 and saw firsthand the kind of difficulties that the natives face, but you can choose from any continent in the world and from a range of different… Continue

Community Currencies

I was familiar with the concept of local or community currencies before this mission and in fact had proposed that my struggling city adopt this practice. The catch for making this work, I think, is to have a catchy name. "Ithaca Hours" was the first community to do it ("the oldest and largest of the local currencies in the USA"), and one in my home state of Massachusetts has "BerkShares" (in the Berkshire Mountains). I have… Continue

Imagining Water Day 2020

On Water Day 2020, we will sing songs in a public place from Urine Town, a musical which highlights in a humorous way the potential problems of a water crisis, as in this song about how only the rich have the privilege to pee, and the poor are required to pay a fee to pee. This could be part of a festival about water, one which includes educating the public… Continue

Clean Water Action -- Political Alliance in Massachusetts

Clean Water Action is a national organization with chapters in a number of states, including my own. Our church has partnered with CWA to work on issues of relevance to our state. In one instance, we arranged an interfaith meeting with a state representative to pressure him to vote for the state's Global Warming Act, which passed the law during the summer of 2008 and became the second state in the nation to do so (after California).

Adopting Watersheds for Kids

Though the link for "adopt-a-watershed" didn't work on the suggested list of sites to investigate for this learn objective, I googled the phrase and found a number of sources available for such a project. One is from the EPA site: http://www.epa.gov/adopt/ and they have another site targeting kids: http://www.epa.gov/OGWDW/kids/. The Water Quality Forum also has a site:… Continue

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
