Policy by gaming: EVOKE, a preliminary a****sment

I run a blog about public policy. I wrote a preliminary a****sment of the EVOKE experience - interesting and in my opinion generally positive, despite the dissatisfaction of some high profile agents over what they perceive as censorship. Anyone interested:

Banking for robustness: Dr Doom and The Black Swan to lead the European Central Bank

April 2020. In a move that credibly signals a will to push for reform, the European Central Bank starts to reinvent itself. Two brilliant, unorthodox scientists are charged with leading it through the reform process: epistemologist/statistician Nassim Taleb (nicknamed The Black Swan, after his best seller book) and economist… Continue

Supporting art in Africa: criteria for EVOKE inspired microlending

I decided to join the EVOKE team (15 members, me included, as of today) on the microlending site Kiva. After some search on the website I allocated a microloan of $50 to Ms. Mame Diarra Samb from Diamaguène Thies, Senegal. She sells works of art at the local market, and will use her loan to purchase more works so she can bolster sales. …

The fastest men in Milano

The Urban Bike Messengers have set up shop in Milano. Significantly, they are headquartered in Hub Milano, the coworking space dedicated to social innovators.

These guys are getting a lot of attention because they managed to throw together three features of small deliveries:

  1. they are green. People like to be seen using them rather than, say, UPS.
  2. they are cool. They have great gear, and…

"Mr Black Swan" has a radical view on money and finance - but it does not go down so well with the World Bank :-)

Nassim Taleb is a quantitative analyst with a long experience in finance. He is the author of a very successful book, The Black Swan, where he contends that most of the variability in the money world is concentrated in very few, very large events. They can't be predicted, or mitigated.

In 2009 he gave an iconoclastic talk at a World Bank conference on… Continue

Adding resilience to the credit system: reputation servers

Money is a promise to pay. If no one can be trusted to honor their obligation, the wh*** money concept collapses.

Futurist Bruce Sterling has come up with the concept of reputation servers. The principle is that the net stores your obligation-honoring track record, makes it available to people who are considering being in business with you. People with a solid reputation have an easier time accessing credit. Insolvency rates go way down.… Continue

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
