Evoke 2

It's been a fantastic learning experience, but there is an infinite amount to learn.

Perhaps the best thing about Evoke has been the uncovering or presentation of new information by the agents and network.

To increase this for Evoke 2, the network should target all the low income families that are benefiting from programs like one laptop per child to collect a vast amount more information. These schemes are not only giving children access to the…

Rallying the taxi drivers

Transport could shut down and public buses or subway trains not advisable. However, taxi drivers in HK (with their LPG engines) have a very good communication network and know the city better than some maps. They could provide intelligence from their passengers on the outbreak, as well as providing transportation to people who need medical attention. It would be like the call to arms from Gallieni, the military governor of Paris, before the Battle of the Marne

The Threat of Disease

One alarming scenario for HK would be the arrival of a new virus that quickly spreads through the densely populated city. Sharing knowledge on the spread would be of vital importance. A network like Ushahidi could help collect data on where outbreaks have occurred and when it would be safe to stay at home, share encouragement that the situation is manageable, and provide advice on where to go for medical assistance. Data of hospitals and other medical service providers would also be useful. In… Continue

The changing face of Money

Something that is fairly big in Hong Kong which is making me carry around less notes and coins is the Octopus card. This is a cashless purchasing facility that can be linked to automatically recharge from your account and just requires a tap for a transaction. It's not used for large sums of money generally and would certainly need a hassle free way to increase security on it if it was going to used more readily. However, we have very few problems with petty crime and mugging in HK so the… Continue

Multi power day

It's all kinetic here but with a bit of sun. A nice cool breeze is blowing, slowly turning some of the wind turbines in the the building's arches. The sun has yet to reach it's zenith, but already the photo voltaic cells are in action on the roof and walls. It's very much team work as nature starts up the acc**ulation of energy and my family adds to that. My kids are busy doing the typical cycling to power the tv to watch the football as normal on a Saturday and have even managed to combine… Continue

A meal in 2020

Today's one of the many community dinners that have begun to happen a few times a week. Although not all of my building's residents are present there is a good mixture of the inhabitants as we consume the produce we have grown on our roof top gardens and balconies, helped party by hydroponics.

The rooftop garden has become the norm for all Hong Kong buildings and, as pollution decreased rapidly in the last decade following a wave of measures, we now have a broad selection…

Lifesaver Water Bottles

These bottles work perfectly for crises as well as everyday function. I am in the process of purchasing my jerry can to use in Hong Kong where although we have clean water, the pipes in old buildings mean it's not clean when it comes out of the taps. However, this infrastructure provides the transportation so let lifesaver do the rest. I estimate it will be in the first year alone over 1 thousand dollars cheaper.

But in aid efforts when vast groups of people are effected by…

IMAGINE 1 - The Beginning of Sustainable Living

In ten years, I will be still in HK but this city will have taken major steps to become much more sustainable. China will have opened up and more responsibility will be taken for the environment. The Clean Air Network will have triumphed to reduce roadside emissions and I will sing about the growing biodiversity of the planet.

I will have reduced my waste and energy usage, and manage to produce all my own energy from renewable sources.

ACT 1 - William Kamkwamba - A Hero

I was deeply impressed by William when I first saw him on TED giving a talk about his windmills. Facing a water crisis and near starvation, William used his talents and drive to build a electricity generating windmill and a water pump, providing not only the ability to irrigate his family's crops, but inspiration for many others in his native Malawi. Indeed his has provided great inspiration to me, proving that dedication and hope can bring life and a better world. Education and his local… Continue

LEARN 1 - Provide Skills Not Just Finished Technologies

Information carries not just power, but also great hope. Hope is something everyone needs to keep close to their hearts and minds. Hope is what we need for the future and keeps us striving to reach our goals.

While a finished technology can provide much needed respite from a lack of electricity or water or heat, it will at sometime need to be replaced. It is not as sustainable as spreading education of the technology, or the skills necessary to build or create technologies.…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
