A Call for Women's Rights in Zimbabwe

I began researching depression in developing countries, and found some interesting data regarding Zimbabwe. Little did I know that my research would lead me to a… Continue

My Agent Symbol

Agent ninmah came up with a fun network challenge: create an agent symbol, such as the ones used by Ember, Quinn and Eureka.

My design skills aren't amazing, but I decided to chalk one up for myself:…

Dinner After a Decade

In March 2020, I'll still be in a Brooklyn apartment with close friends. We'll be eating produce we've grown ourselves on our rooftop garden or a local lot in town, and may invite other friends over who will bring produce they've grown; we'll share what each other does not have. Each of my friends and I might prepare a different meal; I might make vegetable paninis. We will eat all we've made and not waste it; whatever can't be eaten will be used to make compost…

Raj Patel: What Food Riots Really Are

Last year, writer and researcher Raj Patel gave a speech at the Brooklyn Food Conference. I'd like to point it out to my fellow Evoke agents.

Patel discusses the political impetus behind food riots. He calls the tortilla riots in Mexico of 2007 "a specific critique of the government."

In his speech, he also touches on how vegetarianism is more…

Urban Farming in Brooklyn

Living in New York City, I'd say the biggest issue of food security in my community is making sure the homeless and impoverished have a healthy diet.

I did some searching for Brooklyn-specific programs, and found Brooklyn Rescue Mission. BRM cares for a plot in Bed-Stuy called the Bed-Stuy Farm, where they nurture and grow organic produce and distribute it to those who are at-risk of hunger in their…

Celebrate the Spring or Summer Environment - Without Harming It!

As the weather is steadily becoming nicer on the first day of Spring, I offer my tips on how you may take advantage of this weather to make an ecologically friendly party:

  • Have it outside on a fair, sunny day; no need for air conditioning or lights, just sunlight and a nice breeze.
  • Prepare vegetarian dishes made from locally grown produce. Livestock you eat need to be fed themselves, and transported, creating a huge carbon footprint that…

The Hamster Wheel Mentality

This is simply an idea, as I have no mechanical knowledge, but I'd like to consider ways to power my laptop, as (besides a refrigerator) I imagine it uses more energy than any other device I use.

I notice that I often tap my feet while sitting at my desk, and I wonder if there could be some sort of pedal device, like bicycle pedals, that would 1) give my legs something to do while I sit and 2) generate power for my laptop. It's sort of like the idea of using a treadmill or…

10 Years From Now

I hope to continue living in New York City with a stable and enjoyable job. I don't think there is any way I will have an incredible amount of money; I think I'll end up with just enough to get by. But I have a wonderful, close group of friends, and the four of us will continue to support each other into the next decade I hope.

What will the world be like? I hope for there to be diplomatic efforts of peace rather than war and for developing nations to be able to support…

Kohler's Commitment to Conserve Water

Kohler set up a campaign to conserve water with SaveWaterAmerica.com. Visitors to the website are encouraged to take a 3-minute quiz designed to raise awareness of less efficient, water-wasting toilets. For each visitor who completes the quiz, Kohler will donate $1 to Habitat for Humanity towards water-saving products.

After helping to make a difference with the most minuscule effort, I suggest the website's…

Social Innovation: keep what you have, but use it smarter.

From the Innovation in Africa tips post, the tip that resonated most with me was Ethan Zuckerman's point that "What you have matters more than what you lack."

First, it is a great attitude to have throughout one's life. But it is also an extremely practical way of not just finding solutions to the world's problems, but also in marketing those solutions to the public. I have no…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
