2075 Vision for Resilient Cultures

Over the last few decades we have seen the necessity of symbiotic relationships with all types of life: silicon and carbon based cultures have mingled and our consciousness is no longer h*** erectus -- we are now fully h*** evolutis. We have taken biology and evolution into our own hands to craft the types of creatures we wish to be, whether crossed with intelligent devices or custom-tailored genetic cultivation. We are the new hybrids and it is up to each one of us to make the most of our… Continue

California 2020: Interactive Mapping for Resiliency

California 2020 is a map that I've started to show where green roof projects, gratitude gardens, community spaces, energy solutions and emergency food options will exist in various areas. It will take some time to develop this resiliency plan throughout California so my mapping will center on five areas where I live and work most frequently throughout CA. This embedded starter map is taken from our current neighborhood in MidCity Los Angeles, ground zero to this week's episode. You can see…

Crisis Mapping for any Situation

When the earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010 we immediately ran to Ushahidi for help -- I first ran across them two years prior at a NetSquared mobile technologies summit where we were premiering great new tools like theirs. They won an award for being quick to respond and scalable to any disaster, two essential needs for crisis work.

So far the Crisis Commons team has connected with Ushahidi for a handful of disasters in 2010, and we expect this to scale to dozens if not…

Raising Women Producers, Directors & LEADERS!

About 10 years ago I began teaching young girls how to create websites, videos and other digital media creations. The impact of this work is tremendous: a girl quickly realizes her power to create change in the world when given the tools to make new movements.

This year I am teaching a group of girls how to produce their own web series and mobilize their community around new endeavors. We started small, paying for 4 flip cameras for these students to start videotaping their…

Virtual offices providing microloan centers on demand

Here at the Kiva Virtual Office on Aloft Nonprofit Commons Island there's a quiet before the next day of active trading and loans. Over 48000 came in according to the counter at the door and there's no sign of stopping as peer to peer microloans become the standard for middle class development.

Virtual…

TrustTable & Unicorns: RARE Value in Currency Exchanges

For the last decade I have traveled and explored how communities create alternate currency flow, from gift economies and creative exchanges to time banks, local certificates and cards. While I am most impressed with sustainable cooperative measures that create solid trustworthy institutions we must recognize that it is very tough to reach this goal. Groups and networks by nature will struggle with power as it relates to any currency and control of its flow and diligent community builders will… Continue

The Big Flush 2020

At my house we have a little saying...

"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down!"

We have come a long way with toilets that flush less water down the toilet, using pressure and air instead of water to handle sanitation conversions into energy for our homes and communities. Many communities are starting to look at biofuels and waste as fuel to create a…

ACT4: Partnerships for Water

Living in community means making decisions with a large group of people. We meet by consensus and decide how to address our water needs and situations. Since we are currently required by law to be attached to LADWP for our "public utilities" there are certain restrictions on what we can work with locally. Most of Southern California does not allow for composting toilets or other natural waste aeration systems that handle flow differently than the system understands.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
