Local people initiated the practice and were familiar with it!

I selected a case study from the Philippines to highlight. It is a rather simple concept--people formed "mutual-help" groups to work on labor-intensive agroforestry projects. The key to success was that "Local people initiated the practice and were familiar with it."!

Flu teams

In the event of a pandemic flu that is spread from person-to-person, I would try to organize neighborhood flu teams. People will need to be isolated in their homes, so it would be useful to have teams of healthy people who could deliver goods and food and provide services to the sick or those at high risk of becoming sick. There could be a simple online sign up where high-risk/sick people could register for help and where healthy neighbors could view the requests.

In a crisis....

This, to me, is the most important "secret" of crisis management:

"Good health and risk communications means sharing dilemmas, disclosing information, and being transparent."

The Great Unleashing

This is rather coincidental timing, but this event is happening THIS WEEKEND in my community!

The Bloomington Transition Initiating Group will be holding The Great Unleashing, an Open Space event that will engage Bloomington in a collective and committed response, and will kick-off the process of creating a 10-20 year energy descent action plan. It will be a one-day town meeting, celebration and extravaganza that will motivate, excite, educate and engage the community in coming… Continue

Resilience or Emergency Preparedness?

In my area, tornadoes are very common. In addition to property damage, they cause disruptions in power and communications and their damage can block roadways and access for emergency services. When conditions are favorable for tornadoes, I want to know the most likely path of the forming tornado. Afterwards, I want to know what damage it has caused, where dangerous areas are (downed power lines, flooding, etc.) If I were in the path, I'd want a way to communicate my location and status. Of… Continue

Lahore 2020

Amnesty International USA is supporting the International Violence Against Women Act in the US Congress and Senate. The International Violence Against Women Act was re-introduced in the 111th Congress by bipartisan teams in the House and the Senate on February 4th, 2010. I chose to to donate to Amnesty's "Stop Violence Against Women Campaign"

through care2.com for the ACT6 mission.…

Pamela Awino Ahambo

Pamela Awino Ahambo has a clothing boutique in Kisumu, Kenya. Via kiva.org, I have just loaned her $25 USD to expand her business. I like the concept behind kiva.org, but I have never participated by donating money to an individual in this way. However, when I visited Kenya some years ago, several people told me stories of how they had helped women like Pamela get started in business. Sometimes the businesses worked out and sometimes they failed. I hope that Pamela will succeed.

Time Banks

I'm intrigued by the concept of Time Banks:

Seems like success depends on getting a large and diverse group of people to participate.

Half Glass Water Day 2020

Is the glass half empty or half full? is a common expression, used rhetorically to indicate that a particular situation could be a cause for optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty); or as a general litmus test to simply determine if an individual is an optimist or a pessimist. The purpose of the question is to demonstrate that the situation may be seen in different ways depending on one's point of view and that there may be opportunity in the… Continue

Find sponsors for FreePoverty.com

I found a website called FreePoverty.com that is modeled after FreeRice.com, but which offers to donate clean drinking water instead of rice/food. The site appears to need sponsors. I think the site is legitimate and would like to try to find some sponsors for this effort! In fact, perhaps I should invite the creator, Chung-Guk Kim, to join Urgent Evoke if he's not already a member.

Water Pasteurization

Holiday 2020

I can imagine waking up in a solar- and wind-powered house and beginning to prepare for the big holiday meal. My refrigerator and oven are energy-efficient and most my ingredients have been locally grown. My friends and family begin to arrive; many have ridden their bikes or have driven in electric cars that have been charged by various renewable sources. Some have taken public transportation. Our meal is delicious. We wash the dishes with a water-saving and efficient machine. The gray water is… Continue

Wind up radio to charge cell phone

I have an emergency wind up radio with an adapter to charge a cell phone. Instead of keeping the radio in my emergency kit, I can take it out and use it to recharge my phone.

Speaking of wind-up radios, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevor_Baylis

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
