ACT 3: Solar power source for USB gadgets

Supplies finally arrived. Here's a little "instructable" for building a solar power source for your gadgets. It's much easier than you'd think.

Supplies
  • One solar panel, at least 50mA and 5V (~$18)
  • One…

Masdar: a totally carbon neutral city in the middle of the desert?

Apparently so, according to the BBC.

The architects are turning the desert's greatest threat - the sun - into their greatest…

IMAGINE 3: South by Southwest, 2020

An Austin institution turned totally green.

"I thought this year's was supposed to be environmentally friendly," he asked. "This sure heck doesn't look like it..." Music blared in the background.

I was standing by the entrance to one of SXSW's famous free shows Zilker Park. Today, it was an all out party. A band was playing up on the main stage a few hundred yards away... sounded like Arcade Fire. I…

LEARN4: Taking microcredit to new (watery) heights

So, you have a regional water crisis. What do you do? Do you get millions of dollars in donations and install wells around the country? Do you distribute water? Or do you empower the people to get access to clean water?…

IMAGINE 2: Alternate

An alternate ending that fits better with IMAGINE 1.

March 10th. Exactly one week since it had all wound down in Tokyo. Things were stabilizing and the food situation was getting better by the day. The governor was no longer was no longer sweating bullets every night about the food situation. Gardens had started to crop up in local parks and on rooftops—that so called farmpunk had really started to catch on. From Alchemy's taxi (as we affectionately…

Piezo, the Bloom Box, and the future of energy

Dinner!

It’s March 10, 2020. What are you eating for dinner?

I smiled and sat down at the table in our apartment. I looked at the plate in front of me. I didn't care I was eating alone tonight since it was filled with food—something that hadn’t happened…

Nutrition and food security

File-Moringa_oleifera_flower_edit.jpg

While the standard definition of food security encompa**** nutritional security, full food security isn't always totally plausible (yet!) in some areas of the world. However, working on nutrition is a good stepping stone to full food security. It produces definite and tangible results and has a large impact on the health and… Continue

Food problems? In my America?

Food security in the United States: a rather sobering graph.

(A little side note: how appropriate is it that I'm writing this before I go eat dinner? Some things just line up very well...)

Every week, people hear about food security problems in one way or another. Whether it be the stereotypical "starving African",…

EVOKE is everywhere. Literally.

Some food for thought:

As you might have heard from Gene Becker's post on the EVOKEblog, we have over 8000 agents. Think about that.

Now, look at this and think about it. We have agents on every single corner of the globe—in 160 out of the world's 202 countries. Nearly every United Nations member state has an EVOKE…

Making do with what you have and creating something amazing

This is a bit of a sidebar post that doesn't fit in with the mission, but it definitely embodies the spirit of EVOKE.

Chemist George Whitesides created a paper "chip" that uses the hydrophobic properties of comic book ink (yes, comic book ink) to guide blood through little paper channels to an indicator chemical. Those indicator chemicals can diagnose anything from…

EVOKE Dashboard

Okay, so, I thought it would be a better idea to one-off a blog post instead of continually spamming the activity stream with updates.

The EVOKE dashboard is a (relatively) simple way of digesting all the content and awesome creations that EVOKE users produce. It gets all the data from the site's handy RSS feeds and gives you a nice long title/author/date list so you can scan through. A click brings you to the relevant page on the EVOKE…

IMAGINE 1: Infrastructure challenges.

"Life isn't so bad, after all," I thought as I looked around at my surroundings. I had graduated from college exactly 12 months ago (luckily, the world hadn't ended in 2012), and my major in mobile communications had really paid off. With the mass migrations in 2018, the flooding of more and more Pacific Islands, and the river deltas starting to flood Bangladesh,… Continue

Social innovation

Before I finished reading the mission, I already knew who I was going to choose—Matt Flannery.

Matt is one of the cofounders of Kiva, a microlending/microcredit site. Kiva is one of the groups that really kicked off the microlending craze, at least on the internet, and his company has improved numerous lives for the better.

Why did I choose him? It goes back to my last blog post about simplicity. Microlending is one of those simple little…

Simplicity is everything.

After reading through Exhibit A, one thing struck me—a lot of those secrets had something in common and mostly boil down to one key idea. Simplicity.

When you're developing something, whether it be for school, for sale on the wider market, or for empowering others, simplicity is one key element that I think that you must keep in mind. Why?

Well, let's take a look at a familiar example from the modern world. I bet you're reading this on a…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
