LEARN7 Small Island ~ Big Emergency

This small island where I live is vulnerable to disaster, not only do we get some nasty winter storms knocking out power for days, with all the trees and forested areas here a forest fire in the dry season could quickly get out of hand.

We have an emergency response team with RCMP and volunteer firefighters, and have formed a Disaster Relief team who have organized emergency shelter plans at places with generators (resorts and Community Centre). We have a 'buddy' system…

ACT7 Resilience Reality

Resilience is "A highly ordered, complex state—commercial districts and neighborhoods, social networks and infrastructure networks, cycles of water, energy, and food consumption—reduced to a state of chaos and disorder. " according to this article:… Continue

ACT6 My Bridges for Women Video Win's Grand Prize EXCITING!

I posted the first video I made (not counting just letting the film roll) in response to the Bridges for Women contest to celebrate Volunteer Week. I didn't let the huge learning curve or the frustration stop me, I knew I was learning and that's a good thing.

Today I was notified that I won their Grand Prize for my entry, I am just so excited as I had entered a similar contest for TechSoup Global in their Digital StoryTelling Challenge, this one trying to explain what…

IMAGINE9 Calling All Boaters ~ Emergency Evacuation Signal Invoked

Living on a small island as I do, we depend on boats to get us to the hospital on the mainland. We have a ferry that runs every hour but not before 6AM or after 10PM. There are emergency service plans to manage after-hour emergencies but it takes time to get the crew in place and the ferry is slower. Besides, both ferry captains are infected. Sometimes they use a water taxi company but they wouldn't have enough…

ACT8 A Secret Well Kept

This was a hard mission, I'll admit, but worth it. I thought long and hard about this one and spent ages looking up articles and trying to find a good fit. Then I realized, my recent volunteer time with the Akha Hilltribe in northern Thailand gave me first-hand experience about ancient ways, as the family I stayed with still gather lunch from the jungle and cook on an open fire.

When…

ACT6 Bridges for Women Society Volunteer

I volunteer as a member of the Board of Directors for Bridges for Women, a gutsty little non-profit that for more than 20 years has trained women who have been abused with life-skills, financial and employability skills. I make a difference every day by being involved. It's amazing we've survived given the funding cuts but we continue to make a difference in the lives of many.

We have an on-line training program which had to be temporarily shelved due to the cutbacks which…

LEARN9 Canadian FLU WATCH Information

I learned it's important to have the right information when an outbreak occurs so here's a Canadian government site I found that reports on the current conditions which I'll be adding a link to on my Dark Site.

The numbers on the map indicate the region not cases reported.

ACT1 Alexandra Morton ~ A Woman Who Walks The Talk

I have known about Alexandra Morton for many years, she first spoke out that the decline in Killer Whales on the west coast of Canada was related to human behaviour. As a biologist studying the whales for a long time, she not only researched what was happening and why, she truly cared about the whales and became their voice. I remember thinking at the time, what a cool job that would be and I admired her from a distance.

Fast forward twenty years, and her whale research led…

LEARN9 Pandemic Flu Community Preparation Checklist

In researching this Urgent Evoke exercise, I found this preparation guide and if I got one message from my research, it's that we need to be prepared. This checklist I found is for faith-based and community organizations, in other words the people themselves to plan and prepare.

I like that idea, we simply can't depend on government to do it all, we must take responsibility and action in preparing for the next outbreak.

Last year…

LEARN8 Alexandra Morton ~ My Hero and I Meet

It isn't everyday one gets to meet their hero, and today I got to tell one of mine, Alexandra Morton, how she has inspired me over the years, I thanked her for all she does for the environment and wished her safe journey on her long walk to Victoria. The nice thing was, right after I did a young person studying biology said the same thing. Everyone should be inspired by Alexandra Morton. She walks the talk.

Alexandra ran the alarm bell years ago that something was going…

IMAGINE8 The Lice from Fish Farming Epidemic Conquered

LEARN6 Connexion.org = Fantastic Resources!

I found this site, Connexion which has a terrific on-line library of articles, links to websites, books and films etc. What a great resource this will be for me! I love when that happens, I learn one thing, which leads to another and then another. I was searching for women-related but I hit the jackpot with this one which has the vision:…

LEARN8 Alexandra Morton's Walk to Save the Salmon Begins

Alexandra's on her way, and after watching her video on the problem of sea lice and fish farms she's got my attention. If it can happen here, out-of-control lice in my little corner of the world, imagine the disasterous results when they spread to your corner. What's to say the lice only like salmon?

I'm excited to walk with her tomorrow.

ACT2 Supporting my Local Community Gardeners

Our Quadra Island Community Market is starting up May 3. I've always supported buying local and keeping my money on the island and this season I will challange myself to go to our market every week to grocery shop and support the Community Gardeners. I can last without pineapples and avacados I'm sure.

ACT6 Bridges for Women Video A Hit

I recently posted a video (my first) I created for Bridges for Women where I volunteer, and it seems to be a hit because the Board of Directors, which I'm a member of, has asked me to do another one, this time with a focus on our mission - empowering women who have been abused, to be used to spread awareness of our nonprofit to potential volunteers and donors.

I'm thrilled!

IMAGINE8 Message From An Elder Genner

Good. The planet survived and you have found my message from forty years ago. I want you to know we, the like-minded people who realized we could not go on living as we were, did our very best to make this a better planet, and it was no small task given everything was beginning to fall apart - the environment, the poor and homeless numbers rising, war still raging in far too many places and people starving for lack of food or water. So I would like to leave you with a song which says we love… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
