A new school opens...

... and we are gathered under a big tree, shading ourselves from the sun, sipping on Buko juice.

The community is celebrating the first day of our new school. It is the second of its kind. A zero waste, self sustaining campus of 500 learners ranging from 3- 73 years old. This is an intergenerational learning community; there are no walls between cla****, no barriers between the classroom and the workplace and it is often the children who take charge of determining learning…

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink...

I couldn't help but remember Coleridge's words when 80% of Metro Manila was submerged due to flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy on 26th September, 2009.

There was, indeed, water, water everywhere but due to bust riverbanks, burst pipelines, washed out communities, thick sludgy mud that covered a large part of the city, clogged-up roads, for many, there was not a single drop to drink.

The TV channels were transmitting images of middle class families who'd lost everything, cars upturned in… Continue

Ryan Hreljac: The inspiration of a 6 year old.

Looking for a little bit of inspiration?

Hope for the future?

A reminder that our children have all of the answers?

Check out Ryan's story at http://www.ryanswell.ca/

Ryan learnt about the water crisis at school at the age of six. With that child-like belief that anything is possible, he set about proving that this belief is fact.

I met Ryan a year ago, at a Global Issues Network Conference in Bangkok. A seemingly regular High School… Continue

INNER DANCE- a new way to power something I use every day.

My body. This is something that I use every single day of my life. To power it, I need water, nutrition, sun and will This usually does it for me.

I use my body to get me out of bed in the morning, I use my legs to walk out of my front door, my hands to make myself a coffee my feet to climb the stairs to my classroom... I could go on, but I think you get the…

The Dynamic Daniel Dingel and his Water-Powered Car

What a great name for a great inventor. Mr. Dingel lives just south of Manila, Philippines. I was introduced to him by a friend who had heard about this wonderful man and was seeking to find ways to help him patent his idea.

We met him on the corner of his village, and then followed his car back to his house. There was a gentle drip drip drip of water coming out of his exhaust pipe.

I am no scientist but this is what I saw and this is how I understand the invention:

40 years… Continue

Malunggay and Guyabano: Two Superfoods save the day!

By 2020, basic levels of nutrition will have improved significantly across the Philippines. Organisations and private as well as commercial farms will have seeded the land with MALUNGGAY and GUYABANO trees and everyone will have access to these superfoods.
Malunggay (moringa) grows easily here. Trees abound and leaves can always be found in the market and yet its potential has yet to be fully exploited. I learnt about guyabano (or soursop) from a farmer down in Bukidnon; it's a natural…

Securing food in the Philippines...

Last Week I heard a former president speak to an audience of grade 8 students. The values he was extolling were sound and his messages were relevant to the students listening; love and care for each other, promote unity, look after your environment, don't waste your food. Everything was supported with an appropriate anecdote and I nodded in approval along with the other teachers in the audience. But I stopped halfway through my nod when he said, "think of those starving children in Africa".… Continue

When the Tokyo food crisis hits...

...I will be working in my community school on my favourite farm in Bukidnon, Mindanao. I will have spent years in Tanzania, not only teaching, but shadowing my friends' projects in Kenya and Malawi and will have enough knowledge and experience to create my own holistic learning centre in a place i love, in a community I love, back in the Philippines.
My ex-student, Ikuno, who headed up my environment council in Manila back in 2008, will be working for the Japanese government to try to help…

Ashoka fellows- my social innovation role model

In recent months, everything has been coming together. The more I reflect on interconnectedness, the more connections are being formed. A week before I was sent the link to evoke, I was introduced to Ashoka fellows by a friend. Her sister has been one for 7 years creating a global network of volunteers.
THE PLAN- We are currently creating a network of environmentalists, artists, educators and social innovators to ensure better collaboration here in Manila. Over the last six years of living…

It's that easy, right?

Yes.
"See and do the obvious."
So, when you're in a sprawling international school serving the Philippines' wealthiest consumers, and you see, on a daily basis, students being driven into school in SUVs, ignoring their drivers, using their maids as personal bellboys, walking to their aircon classroom, skirting around the grass in the playground, fearful of getting dirty, squealing when they see an insect come near them, throw their trash on the ground, pull off leaves when they…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
