Living in the U.S., I rarely encounter food shortages. The main problem

we have here in Florida is unusual climate extremes; too much rain, too

little rain, prolonged cold or heat. We usually enjoy a warm climate

through most of the year, and if it gets cold it hardly ever drops below

30 degrees. So farmers grow crops like citrus, and tomatoes. This year

even Florida was affected by climate fluctuations, though. The prolonged

cold weather destroyed 60-70% of… Continue

IMAGINE1

I imagine a public policy & civics research and education institute

that works to put information in more accessible formats. People learn

differently when the information they're getting isn't intimidating, and

even more so when it's fun. They like to be entertained. Unfortunately,

the mere mention of public policy, government, or civics immediately

makes people think "boring". Then their brains shut down.

I think this is one of the reasons why the… Continue

Micro-volunteering

Today I was reading through a Google Wave public thread about the impact of technology on social change in which someone mentioned a group called The Extraordinaries. As a busy working college student who wants to help but doesn't always have the time, I really appreciate the effort these people are making, and I plan to try this out as soon as possible.

I think the concept of "micro-volunteering" is interesting. It relates to what I've been… Continue

Lately I've been developing a strong interest in those rare instances in

which the business world and the world of community assistance

intersect. I think more businesses should serve a greater purpose in the

community than simply to make money. It's seems like a more worthwhile

use of time and energy, and a business that also helps the community can

be more sustainable than your average non-profit.

For a semester, I was part of a group called the American… Continue

"Provide skills, not just finished technologies."

There is a Chinese proverb I've always liked that goes, "Give a man a fish, and you

feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Through

the sharing of knowledge and experience we learn how to progress. Those things

we share with each other become a structure that we can improve over time, with

each generation adding a…

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
