FairShare: Community Charity/NGO/NGO Community Barter/Trade Website (work in progress)

The Place:
this project focuses on local communities, and will be worldwide.

--------------------------------

The Challenge:
this project will support the work of local charities/NGO/NPO. it will also assist with the development of new groups within the community. smaller and newer organizations often have a lack of money, volunteers and employees, which hinders their ability to work.

--------------------------------

The Idea:
this project will be a website for connecting local charities/NGO/NPO to each other and larger charities. the idea is that every organization has resources that can be bartered, traded or gifted to others; each organization also has its own needs. this can create a large local pool of resources that, optimistically, will be cost-effective, cheap or (preferably) free. this project is POLITICALLY INDEPENDENT and will not endorse or support any particular organization.

the resources are people and equipment. smaller and newer organizations often have smaller tasks or needs, and may not have money or need for specialized full-time employees or new equipment. this project would provide a place for these organizations to connect and discuss needs and resources.

example:
a local charity needs a good projector for a community exhibition. a local NPO may have one, and a need for some web programming and design.

there will be a local website (or subsection of a website) for each city/town/community. local workers and volunteers will support their local website.

there will also be a focus on support for new organizations. this project would provide them with an immediate pool of contacts and resources. an area for advice on organizational and business concerns for charities/NPO/NGO will be a useful part as well. however, this board will NOT be a place for the discussion or debate of social issues; there are plenty of other places for that. this project is also about fostering a sense of community among the different organizations; where they will assist each other despite their differences.

myself and the other people working on this project will actively and continuously research and contact the charities, NPOs and NGOs in the local communities. i am also considering restricting members to the organizations that work for INCREASING civil rights and against destroying the earth.

--------------------------------

The Technology:
the website will support the barter/trade/gift system with a sophisticated profile system and search engine. this system will assist and automate the processes of asking for and offering goods and services.

each organization will fill out a full profile. each organization will be researched and approved by admins and owners. they will make sure that it is a real organization with real members and a real purpose.

each service or item offered would be referred to as a Resource. a Resource's details include a description of the service/good, initial asking price/value, tags, dates of availability and classification.

when an organization has a need, they submit a Request. a Request's details include a description of the needs and requirements, estimated budget, tags, target time frame and classification.

the classification will use a tree structure that helps with sorting and finding Resources and Requests. all of the details will be a part of the matching process. this will assist in searching, as well as allowing for an automated match suggestion process.

Resources and Requests can aggregate; a Request may require multiple Resources.

i would prefer to create this using the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache Server/Tools, MySQL, PHP/Perl).

--------------------------------

The Money:
the initial money will go towards building the initial website. it will also include the cost of reaching local charities/NPO/NGO, as well as contacting other towns and cities. additional funding for the upkeep will come through donations.

Kind of like a skills bank for organizations? Sounds like a logistic nightmare, but quite doable with the right people.

It is very interesting idea. I think it can work between different charities, because for example in Your idea where local charity needs projector, I think many people/organizations would be willing to borrow this because they can immediately see why charity needs this, they can feel that it will be put to good use.

Most complicated part is getting different charities to join. There should be equal amount of "offers" and "requests" for this site to work: if there is massively more requests than people who can help, then it could be problem.

Would this site only accept registered organizations? Would You hand-review every organization before adding to site?

I ask this because I am worried about security. Projector can be quite valuable, and it would be too easy to create "fake organization site" in purpose of stealing this.. of course, if two people meet face to face to give the projector to other person, it would not be such problem.

Second problem I imagine is it could be hard to bring offer and request together.

For example, I post "I need projector".

If there are 1000 organizations and 10000 requests, how would person with projector to offer ever find me?

Maybe there could be some intelligent AI to bring requests together?

For example, I have projector to offer. I write "projector, LCD projector, screen projector"

And then person who wants to request just writes "projector" and finds this with site search.

I think this could work. Texas is big, I assume there are many different such charities and organizations? Would You personally start this? How do You think You would make it interesting and appalling for organizations with something to offer to join?

Very interesting idea!

I think it's very doable, and useful! It's fairly similar to things that already exist, such as time trade groups, and Craigslist, JustGive.org, and WiserEarth.org, but the added elements of focusing on organizations only and personal touches such as actively featuring groups and seeking them out, and encouraging groups to share resources, might be a valuable new creation.

Also, what if you removed the complicated idea of bartering, and just set it up as freely offered donations/volunteer-work/resource-sharing?
