About improving a person life thanks to a role playing game with persistant world

After reading the 33 secrets for social innovation here : http://designinafrica.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/innovation-in-africa... I have decidided to choose this one :
"Deliver value : what are the benefits for people using the end product, does it improve a persons life ?"

This advice is the one I find the most helpful concerning my own actual work : creating a small 3D persistent world (see Delta Lyrae 6) as aesthetics' experiments.

It resounds with the conference given by Jane McGonigal about how gaming can make a better world, that I just discovered today. As a art field student, it has some specific signification to me.

Can video game be art ? Can art helps people in any way, improve their life ? Could aesthetic feeling help people getting better persons ? Is it that obvious that collaborative gaming helps you be comfortable with collaborative work or creation, or does the purpose of this collaboration counts ?

A lot of questions, not many answers at this time, but I really think it is important to always keep in mind what is the final purpose, when creating piece of art, or even a game. Is it just for money, glory, just for yourself, or for something bigger ?

I am not so sure about that ! Through time, art has been at the service of religion, politics, science. I think the definition is not to be without purpose, but more that there is an artist wanting some piece to be art. But of course it is subject to (interestings) discussion ! So, why do you think so ?

Cool project! Edwige!!! video Games are an art form. Art can confront us, ask uncomfortable questions, make us dream in what we consider impossible, it can be shocking or comforting, it can be a mirror and a space to escape too. Video games are all this and also they are tools that can help us transform our realities. One thing I love about video games is that they are the sum of all art forms, literature, painting, cinema etc . . . all in one.

Thanks for your compliment Patricio !

And thanks a.v. to continue this discussion !

I believe that if you make art for yourself, it still has a purpose ! The artist is its first spectator, I think. I also used to teach art (computer arts actually) and also said to my students to do things they like, and not what industry awaits, because after the studies, they won't have this possibility again. Freedom is important, I totally agree on that, and as an artist, it is not so easy to get. But do art for someone else or for some cause is something an artist can do, as well as he can do something for him only. That is my point : why are you doing art, what is the purpose ? I think most of the time there is a purpose (to express something from inside, to share some feeling, for instance) and it is really important for the artist to realize that.

For a video game maker (and especially for massivelly multiplayer online game), it is a bit different because you are doing your best to share it to a lot of people. So it is even more important to realize what you want these people to feel, think and learn playing your game. To know why you are doing something doesn't mean you don't give all your heart and creativity into it !

Actually, there are quite a lot of very famous artist (including painters, or tradionnal artists) that have talked and written about their, and creation process and the meaning of it. But I know it is still a debate in visual art about that (in music it is more natural, I can't say why ! ;) )

Edwige your game design is beautiful! Do you have a list of potential players? I want to be on it!

Wow it is wonderful, I had no idea the process of making a game was so real. That must sound so stupid (so I'll continue) but you are drawing stuff. I am going to have to go back and look at what you are doing I wish I lived in Paris I'd ask you to show me how and what you are doing!

If you ever came to Paris, send me a message ! It is really motivating to have return on a work like that. Sometimes it looks like it is advancing so slowly...

The game creation process is not always such a an experimental craft ^^ Most of the time, a game of that type (mmorpg in 3D) is made by a team of about 200 experienced video game professional for about 2 years. Here I am alone, using my polyvalent but more limited skills in that fiels and opensource middleware (that helps a lot). It is closer to a painting creation process, if you were using some very new and unstable paint and brushes !

Anyway, to test, no need to be in Paris :) You need a computer with Windows (at least XP) not to old if possible, because the game is in 3D and uses shader effects.

1/ Download the viewer here : http://www.armaghia.fr/phd/Realxtend1_042_mini.rar
2/ Unrar this file somewhere on your computer
3/ See your messages to find your ids (I have send some ids to Sarah and Patricio too)
4/ Tell me when you are ready and wanting to try so I can launch the server. The server is on my own computer now, so I don't launch it all the time. Moreover, if you tell when you come, I will try to be there too, so we can discuss in this virtual world and I can make you visit the island.
5/ In the folder when you unrared the file, click on "Realxtend.exe", type your ids, and after loading, you will be in !

ahah, you don't need a team of 200 experienced monkeys, all you need is the idea in your mind, the motivation in your heart, and the legs to keep on walking since the first baby step to the last running mile ;D
And it looks like you got them all, the game is looking great!

I have downloaded it but I am having trouble opening it, my computer is slow and I need to download a reader for it. I am going away for a few days and not sure I will have a connection going to try and get a dongle! Will come back to you later. Thank you so much for this.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
