A crash course in changing the world.
ON KENYAN M-PESA
I saw this example and realised that the practice is spreading spontaneously. For I do not think the Kenyans consulted with Nigerians, vise versa.
In Nigeria today, cell phone recharge cards are used to effect swift money transfer. The sender buys the recharge card say five hundred Naira, scratch it and send the pin number to the receiver through text message or phone call. The receiver there after sells the pin to a public mobile phone service operator for a lesser price. The buyer must ensure that the pin is genuine by activating his credit before payment.
This practice is a form of money transfer that is very rampant in Nigeria. It is very popular in situations where families want to send money to their loved ones in school.
I see a future whereby this practice will be very influential in Africa as communication via mobile phone expands.
