A crash course in changing the world.
The indigenous knowledge that I would pass on is that of shifting cultivation. This is because it is important that we conserve our land. My father is a cattle farmer and he practices agriculture in this way. He understands the importance of allowing ones land to rest for a few months after it has been grazed by animals. Shifting cultivation is the practice where land is never over used or repeatedly cultivated season after season and year after year. (http://www.grida.no/publications/et/ep3/page/2608.aspx).
My hand held device is made out of wood. On it are symbols which represent the various seasons as well as the different areas of land. The object shows that as the seasons change, so too should the land being used change. I decided to make use of pictures, in the hope that in the future, people will be able to interpret the pictures. I am not sure what language will be used in the future and this is why the use of pictures is particularly important.
