It's August 13, 2020, my birthday. Although I am in my 50s and should have grown out of this by now my birthday remains my favorite day of the year.
It's dusk and I am at my cottage in Nova Scotia with my husband, kids and family. My grandchildren are chasing fireflys in the garden while we, the adults, sit in the screen porch and enjoy the evening breeze. In the distance, out near where the water meets the sky I can just make out the shadow of the windmills that are helping to power the province's homes, schools and public spaces.
The sound of the ocean lapping against the beach is soothing. I close my eyes and think for a moment about the wonderous strength of the ocean and how it has supported my family for generations. My great, great grandfather was a fisherman, my great grandfather a sea captain, my grandfather and my father sailors. Recently, my son has started harvesting the seaweed abundant along the coast to be used in power generation. This biomass energy is now helping to run the tiny fairy lights strung along the the edge of the porch that are lighting my celebration.
I open my eyes to see the faces of my family. There is so much hope and love here. My grandchildren run onto the porch to show me the firefly they captured in a mason jar. They marvel at the energy this tiny little organism can produce. I smile and remind them that we all have great power within us to light up our world.
