A crash course in changing the world.
The spirit of sports and the spirit of women empowerment come together.
When I found this article at the UN gender equality news feed, I just wondered why this is an information concerning gender issues.
Then I realized that in Germany, I think in the entire western hemisphere, it is quite common for women to take part in sports events, and to be depicted in a sports dress. An overwhelming sexual connotation is, for us, not to be found.
In Gaza, and in other countries with an islamic majority, it is different. It is highly unusual for women there to show skin - nicely said.
I really like the idea of sports being a tool of emancipation. After reconsidering the cultural background, this marathon run is a good opportunity to present the topic of gender equality. It is a kind of sport, men and women can practice almost equally well, with a certain duration and no requirements regarding equipment - a non-discriminating sport.
There are a number of comparable events which unite sports and the idea of gender equality:
For expample the Gay Games, last year in Cologne. The idea to combine charity events with sports is not a new idea but events like the Gaza Marathon and Gay Games genereate a different, a non-elitist, kind of publicity. It serves as a platform for those who are discriminated so they can present themselves and their needs. They are the protagonists and not the celebrites who donate.
