I'd like to start off by admitting something. I have never actively worked toward a local or global cause. I've never volunteered, funded, or raised awareness for a social concern, locally or globally. That's not to say I've never wanted to support a cause, but in my experience, whenever I've been approached by an activist for a cause that I support, while they are enthusiastic about my support, their end goal always seems to be my money. As a student, this is always a problem, because money is something I never seem to have.
My friend posted a link to Evoke on Facebook, and it struck an interest. A cause I agree with that wasn't asking for money, but for ideas? As an artist, Ideas are something I can easily spare. This is exactly why the secret to innovation stating that what you have matters more than what you lack is one that particularly struck me.
It got me thinking. What is it that I have that I can contribute? First off, I already established that I have ideas, that's easy, but what else? I have my art. I'm nowhere near famous, I've never had a gallery show, but that's never stopped me from producing art. I have the internet, and, more importantly, I have a relatively popular internet persona with anywhere between 100 to a few thousand readers, depending on the day and topic of a blog post. I also have friends who could advertise these posts on their website as well, and easily increase the audience to tens of thousands.
Now that I've figured out what I have, the social innovation is figuring out what I can do with it.I know I can bring awareness to any problem, the internet makes that easier now than it ever was ten or twenty years ago, but that's not innovative, so what can I do? That's what I'm trying to figure out. I'd like to form a team, meet up with people and form ideas. If anyone reading this is in the Chicago area and would like to work together, brainstorm on projects, and come up with ideas, I'd be more than willing to.
