... and we are gathered under a big tree, shading ourselves from the sun, sipping on Buko juice.
The community is celebrating the first day of our new school. It is the second of its kind. A zero waste, self sustaining campus of 500 learners ranging from 3- 73 years old. This is an intergenerational learning community; there are no walls between cla****, no barriers between the classroom and the workplace and it is often the children who take charge of determining learning objectives, curriculum mapping and a****sments. They own the learning because they understand what the focus needs to be. They are not jaded by the system, their ideas are pure, their persistence without egotistical intention and they do not overcomplicate concepts with complex jargon.
Music plays from the big speakers that are powered by the bicycles out back, a video of prospective students is projected onto a white sheet hung from the bamboo rafters of the assembly hall, solar-powered. And the cups we have in our hands are bamboo, our straws lemongrass and our vegetable snacks, harvested yesterday from the community garden in our other school.
Business entrepreneurs, farmers, artists, sportsmen, writers, social workers, toddlers, teenagers, young mothers.... all educators gathered together.
WE CAN.
