A crash course in changing the world.

ACT 1: the search for social innovators - meet :Ms. Ory Okolloh - Kenyan Pundit.

Well, it has not been a very simple decision to make but I think Ms. Ory Okolloh deserves to be my "hero".
Who is Ms. Ory Okolloh?
Ms. Ory Okolloh is the co-founder and Executive Director of Ushahidi.
Ushahidi is a free and open source project with developers hailing from Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Malawi, Netherlands and the USA working on it. The Ushahidi Engine is a platform that allows anyone to gather
distributed data via SMS, email or web and visualize it on a map or time-line. Their goal is to create the simplest way of aggregating
information from the public for use in crisis response.
Why Ms. Ory Okolloh?
I am very enthusiastic about technology, education, communities and development: that's why I am choosing Ms. Ory to be my hero. Ushahidi is one of the projects that have been very successful in tackling Africa's projects and I commend her work on the blog "Kenyan Pundit" - blogging remains one of the best ways of sharing knowledge, experiences in Africa and also plays a big role in community development. Her blog not only portrays her opinions and commentary but also provides links to other African blogs - "African Crew" and a wide range of links for blogs from different corners around the world.
How I intend to shadow her online?
I believe in the power of social media in connecting people and sharing knowledge that's why......
I am following her on twitter (and we have just exchanged a few tweets), I have sent her a facebook friendship request and also bookmarked her blog "Kenyan Pundit".
Email is also going to be very helpful - did I even mention that I have already sent an email to her? - on my twitter she wrote: "kenyanpundit @jssozi I've seen it, will respond."

My journey to social innovation has just began!

Great choice! I also thought about shadowing Ms. Ory Okolloh, but then chose otherwise as I saw she already has a steady following here :)

I admire her work of making Kenyan politicians accountable. I think that is inspirational for everyone, not just for citizens of African nations. Everywhere we have corrupt or simply lackadaisical politicians who would benefit from the feeling of being held accountable.

I agree with you Antti, she is doing a great job. And on top of that she is also using the technology - internet, social media, not to forget the Ushahidi tool. Many people in Africa still lack a platform to express their views and opinions to wider communities - in many cases because they dont know how to use such tools.
I always look at technology as one of the key tools in solving a wide range of problems the world is facing today. But then again, I realise that people need the skills if they are to fully harness the potential of the technology at hand.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
