According to
Guardian, The
World Bank approved a controversial $3.75bn loan to build one of the world's largest
coal-fired power plants in
South Africa yesterday.
Environmental organizations tried to block the loan, six countries
(US, Britain, the Netherlands, Italy and Norway) abstain from vote in protest. US treasury department said the loan was
incompatible with the bank's stated commitment to promoting low carbon economic development.
Guardian also publish the explanation of World Bank official, why this decision was made:
"It was not an easy decision," he said.
"Everybody recognised the
concerns about climatechange, but this was a balancing act."I will allow myself to tag this post as LEARN3 again.
