ACT1 - Sir Ken Robinson - All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education

My ACT1 "hero" is Sir Ken Robinson
I saw his TED Talk below a year ago and it deeply touched my thoughts on our educational system which still draws from the industrial paradigm: producing standardized human ressources, putting lot´s of junk facts into young minds mostly without practical application - teaching unimportant subjects while important subjects do not even show up on the curriculum, underestimating the value of play and creativity.

"Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. He has
worked with governments in Europe, Asia and the USA, with international
agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and some of the world’s leading
cultural organizations. In 1998, he led a national commission on
creativity, education and the economy for the UK Government. ‘All Our
Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education’ (The Robinson Report) was
published to wide acclaim in 1999. He was the central figure in
developing a strategy for creative and economic development as part of
the Peace Process in Northern Ireland, working with the ministers for
training, education enterprise and culture. He was one of four
international advisors to the Singapore Government for its strategy to
become the creative hub of South East Asia." Quote from his website

Playful, game like education (edutainment) in which projects are exciting quests and gradings are "Experience Points" "Achievements" as we know them from video games - this is one of my main themes in my work as a media designer and -trainer. Although I have done many projects in this regard I still feel that I do not give 100% of my service and currently being stucked in my media lab.

That´s why I re-connected with Ken to get inspired.
Hooked up with his twitter. Became part of his Facebook Group. Contacted him via Facebook a couple hours ago and studied his Website.

I finish with a copy of my mail to him - which explains a bit where I come from in terms of education:

Dear Ken
- after watching your TEDvid and others I felt much resonance with your exciting quest of shaking up the educational system and pointing towards values of creativity, play, passion.
I am a member of EVOKE, the cool "Serious Game" - currently on this mission: http://www.urgentevoke.com/page/social-innovation-act. I have chosen you as social innovation role model in this mission.

Today 35, I left school 4 month before any official graduation as a 16year old, moved from Germany to France just to hitch hike from there all the way to an abandoned Irish island - without any money. This was my rite of initiation, my vision quest and it taught me more about life than the last graduation months of my school.

Everyone told me back home: Without graduation I will land in the gutter. But I followed my passion, kept my passion for playful learning quests, worked as a performance artist, got a job in California as a 19 year old (up in Monterey), was even hired as a product manager in new business development for orange plc in my short bizz endeavors. Today I work as a freelancing cross media designer and social media trainer - skills I haven´t learned in the educational system but that my "Playful Learning Quests - PLQ´s taught me.

I feel that I´m still hiding a big part of my service in the shadow, in my solitude lab and that I do not give 100% of my passion, skills and experiences to the world. The element burns within me and yet - the fire still stucks in the breast. Liberating this fire and expressing it is my current life´n live quest.

Before this friendship request gets any longer: Sir Ken - let´s do this facebook connection thing if you like....I´ll also hook up with your "tribe" Chief ken ;)

cheers from German(iacs) land

I remember hearing about a survey where corporations said they with university graduates were better at problem solving. It shows that nobody is happy with the outcomes of the current educational system.

+1 Courage.. both for taking your own path and for actually contacting Ken.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
