Act1.5 My Chosen Mentor ~ Jane McGonigal, Master GameDesigner and Action Woman

Hearty Greetings

This is my second time around Evoke
so I've decided to choose a different mentor than the one I followed last year and continue to do so, Alexandra Morton who is still going strong to save our wild salmon here on the west coast, I'm writing the letters and still doing what I can to support her. But a very soon time after I started playing Evoke, I added another mentor to my list.

It made my eyes pop
when I saw the number of hours and money spent in Jane's TED talk. Imagine the million's of dollars spent on virtual carrots while someone in another country starves for lack of a bite of food.

We all know Jane
McGonigal here and if you don't, get cracking she is the one who is behind Evoke, Gameful and her latest one, Find the Future. Her movement to create games for the social good has begun.

Jane is
the author of Reality is Broken, which is opening up people's eyes to the number of hours and amount of money being spent on games. I guess I hadn't given it much thought given I'm not a gamer except for Evoke and then Gameful, now back to Evoke, while popping into Second Life for my volunteer work at the Nonprofit Commons. These aren't really games in my mind. Although I so love seeing my little runes sparkling and my Monster treats pile up each time I see them :)

One of the greatest
videos that I discovered last round in Evoke which left a lasting impression for a lifetime on me is this one, "How to Start a Movement" by Derek Sivers. Right then and there I decided I would the 'follower' of Jane and she would be my silent mentor.

So I did my best
in Evoke 1, and I've been doing my best to keep the Gameful site lively, heck I even rounded up a team and brought them back over here. I did stretch the rules just a bit to get some of them in, which I'll explain in a later post. Look out for the GUEM team we are 41 people from 17 countries and I'm excited. This is the first true unit of the Evoke Network in my mind, so I'm calling them 'Evoke Unit1'. This is only the beginning.

Derek says
"One thing a leader needs is the guts and courage to stand out and be ridiculed" which has happened to Jane, there's been a flurry of posts around the web picking and kicking at her vision admidst the cries of "Yes this is the answer!". But, having followed her tweets and Facebook for some time now I only see it making her stronger.

It is from reading about
and learning from Jane and in Evoke and Gameful, that I have started my own little movement which is to inspire ordinary people to make a difference for the good in life for all, however small. But first, I'm all eyes and ears learning what it takes to be a great leader, and I must add, I'm having a lot of fun playing these games while I'm at it. Not bad for a non-gamer.

Thank you Jane
I do believe your aspirations for a Gameful Monster to win a Nobel Prize is scathingly brilliant, it will happen, and I hope it's you.

Wow, this is probably one of the better-said blog posts that i have read so far. It's cool that evoke had some old members coming back for another round. Although, I must say, I am rather curious about this "Evoke Unit 1"!

Thank you for your kind comment Bryce, and yes I think it's cool the regulars can help out the new Agents too. All will unfold about the EvokeUnit1 team once they've completed their training :)

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Foods are vacc** sealded for easy…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
