I come from an upbringing that emphasized a strong focus on public service but my strengths pushed me to creativity and design. After researching Project H and Emily's journey the need for the "but" in my previous statement begins to disappear.
It is important, more now than ever, that our perspectives shift towards global purposes and what I have found is that you can do that and still play to your own personal strengths. Everyone's skills are valuable when applied correctly. It will take a global effort to make global progress on the obstacles that our brothers and sisters face. Be it art or science, it applies. Be you a creator, facilitator, or a laborer, YOU APPLY. You don't have to be a politician or possess the knowledge of 5 languages to be able to make your impact felt across the Earth, you just have to try.
Project H is really a break the mold entity that thinks of ways to benefit the world using aspects of design. The truly embody the ideal I picked in Learn1: Provide skills, not just finished technologies. They interact and find ways to include the end user. They helped the homeless in LA withe creating a bag that doubles as an easy to use hammock, but "they" included a homeless woman who played an integral role and now earns income from the project.
I really appreciate their "treat the disease, not the symptom" mentality. It is big-picture thinking and I am excited to see what they do next!
You should look them up if you haven't picked a shadow yet
Even is you picked somebody else to shadow or another cause to support, please check out this one:
