Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Four evoke agents got together to brainstorm what we could do to learn more about food security and develop a plan to act locally. After preliminary discussions we realized that we wanted to learn by doing and decided to develop a small ("four-door") garden and test urban farming techniques, such as those found in this article. These techniques are specifically designed for getting maximum yield out of small garden areas.

Since two of us own a small plot of land we can begin immediately to prepare the soil while we learn more about how to proceed. We are hoping to be able to raise enough vegetables to supply the four of us for some period of time.

Obviously, a big part of this project for us is to carefully doc**ent what we do and what results we get. Carefully monitoring the impacts of nature (the weather, insects, "critters", etc.) will help us understand much more about how this type of gardening can be used to help address the food security problem around the world.

Dean, what a great idea! I don't know if you've already solved this but wrote a little piece on heirloom and cross polinated seeds and where to get them - at very reasonable prices. They've also got a wealth of information.

I look forward to reading of your experiences! I am in the third year of a very small urban garden that grows enough for four people.

Linda,

Looks like some very interesting information. I'll share it with our group.

Have any quick warnings of things you know now you wish you would have known then? :-)

Thanks,

Dean

VERY exciting. It would be wonderful if you could share the progress of your project with some pictures too!

Ayala,

We fully expect to do that. Visuals are very important. Thanks.

Only this - if you are doing ground bed planting, or even using ground soil in your containers - have your soils analyzed. You can have it done at your local cooperative extension (state agriculture dept). It is good to know what type of soil you have and how to amend it. I'm in Florida so I've pretty much decided to garden above ground as we have sandy soil and a huge nematode problem. Read about drip irrigation and misting systems and start some rain barrels!

Linda,

Thank you for those tips. Instead of sand here in NH we have granite outcroppings so we may have similar issues.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
