Our small island has a wonderful summer community Saturday market where it's as much a social event as it is a sale of home-grown this and that. People of all ages wander around chatting to friends and stopping at the "regulars" tables who, week after week hold down their spot, rain or shine, hot or cold, or simply battened down tight when the winds come. Everyone knows everyone except the tourists and it's hard not to be merry with the live music from a local band a far cry from the canned music of a shopping mall.
Among these are people selling locally grown produce from either their small farming operation, in their own garden or from their plot at our local community garden. I have to admit, I usually passed on purchasing much produce, say for instance carrots. I'm from the squeaky clean plastic wrapped generation and normally have plenty snuggled up in a bag in my fridge. Well this year is going to be different.
When our community market opens, I'm going to bring my own basket and buy local produce each week. A small start yes, but it's an action I intend to act on. In this way, while I won't actually be feeding one person, I will be supporting the local growers in my community and in a way helping them put food on their tables.
The nice thing is, unlike produce in the grocery store which must be exhausted from their long journey, I know the local stuff will be as fresh as the morning dew because that's when it was probably picked.
