ACT6: A Nepalese women's savings and credit cooperative

I chose to support a GlobalGiving project that supports Nepalese women by giving them agricultural training and developing a women's savings and credit co-op.

In Nepal poverty is not just a lack of income. It is a lack of resources, opportunities and skills. The poor typically have poor quality land, limited rights, widespread illiteracy and a near absence of business infrastructure beyond agriculture. Cultural traditions make the problem worse and ensure that women have even fewer economic or political roles. The project will help 300 women access economic opportunities, build leadership skills, and develop sustainable farming methods.

I chose this project for several reasons. Not only does it tie into the empowerment of women, it's also a glimpse at several previous challenges—improving money and food security.

The GlobalGiving project describes itself as a project to

Strengthen women’s cooperatives, develop management skills of the members, and improve the economic position of the women through income generating projects and sustainable agriculture practices.

Training will be provided on sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness, also on matters of governance, and skills to run an effective cooperative. Information sharing will be encouraged and there will also be workshops on gender issues.

This project is one that I felt really good about supporting, without many qualms. It takes the wh*** "teach a man to fish..." adage (a seemingly common thread throughout EVOKE's many projects) to heart. It teaches, not just gives, an important part of keeping the trend of social and economic status going upwards instead of stagnating. In addition, it also encourages food security in hard hit areas of Nepal. Training on methods of sustainable agriculture and agricultural management are proven ways to increase a family's food security—just look at some of the blog posts about it from mission 4. Finally, the women's savings and cooperative element is also a big boon. As seen from the previous mission, community banks and microsavings have shown awesome results when implemented in Latin America and Africa. Doing the same thing in Nepal is getting the women of Nepal on the right track towards success.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
