I help empower women every day. I work as a professor in a local post-secondary institution. However, it's not a regular "university". This institution is geared towards low-income, poor, disadvantaged students. Our main students are single mothers with a low level of education, women who are trapped in harmful relationships, and some men who need rehabilitation. By catering to this population we are helping people who would otherwise be victims become empowered, learn a profession, and break free from the bonds of the society they were born into. By offering these women a number of scholarships in addition to traditional aid, free text books, financial aid with uniforms, free reviews for the board, programs for various types of economic aid while studying, and job placement disadvantaged women go through our programs without ever having to pay a cent or worry about who will take care of their kids. Once they finish they go right into the job market as nurses, paramedics, pharmacy technicians, therapists, or office assistants. My part in this is teaching them language and self-worth. By teaching them English I am empowering them and giving them a chance at a better job or better pay, and by using motivating stories in the classroom I can teach them that they are not worthless, that they are priceless, and that they should not engage in self-destructive behavior, including relationships that are bad for them.
