THE GAME SO FAR...
I thought Urgent Evoke was great fun and a really intriguing way to learn about complex issues. I particularly like the way that the game interacts with real people and encourages real actions.
However, I think that the challenges became a little repetitious and started feeling a bit too much like "homework." Kids in California already have a ton of homework and unless this was part of a class activity, the challenge might be too taxing.
I also felt that some of the challenges were aimed at the high end of the educational/developmental spectrum. They might interest high school juniors and seniors and be less interesting to younger kids.
Timing - this session falls right at the end of the school year in California. Juniors are busy cramming for AP exams, Seniors are applying for scholarships or dreaming about "the prom." Summer or Fall might be ideal times to play this game!
NEW CHALLENGES
Climate change trumps all other concerns. That said, there are a series of cascading issues that following climate change.
Week 1) The Situation - Climate Change: Let's make the world carbon neutral
Week 2) Crowdsourcing the answer - problem solving via social promotion
Week 3) Peak Oil - Disrupting the global economy
Week 4) Drought in temperate regions - a new "green revolution" is needed
Week 5) Refugees - housing, feeding, relocating
Week 6) Invisible children
Week 7) Species die-off
Week 8) Plenty of fish in the sea - or not
Week 9) Urban renewal - Cities provide and energy efficient answer
Week 10) Prepare for the Next Urgent Evoke
NEW TOOLS FOR EVOKE AGENTS
I'd like to see the next Evoke work more as a simulation game. The goal of the game would be to reduce the carbon emissions of 12 major cities around the world without disrupting the balance in the economy or environment.
Solutions are enacted by group social promotion - vote the best ideas to the top. Item with most votes wins.
Solutions may have unintended consequences. For instance, capping carbon emissions in Shanghai will cut factory output and have an impact on the economy of Los Angeles. This will negatively impact relief efforts in the drought regions.
NEW REGIONS TO EXPLORE
All 12 cities will be up and online for agents to explore from the start of the game. Experience points can be gained by visiting checkpoints throughout the game. Points are also gained by proposing solutions and by the number of votes gained on an idea.
This allows players to enter the game late, gain points by simple exploration or participation.
FUN AND GAMES
There would be checkpoints in each of the 12 cities that are just there for fun. Maybe some regional games, indigenous art online coloring pages (points for coloring in a sand painting), maybe a virtual kalimba where you can compose your own music. Again, points are awarded for simply playing in the game.
GIRLS- Might be more interested if there were more opportunities for just plain socializing, getting together with real online "pen-pals" from sister cities.
BOYS- Might be more interested if there were more opportunities to defeat opponents. Certainly you don't want to include warfare or killing, but there might be a way to have a "takedown" challenge to overthrow an evil corporation or "blow up" a coal fueled polluter.
