In looking at the suggested blogs to follow I got no further than
AfriGadget.com. As a former engineer I am blown away by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people highlighted on this blog. We spend so much time learning about efficiency and proper procedures, and we learn about the discoveries and inventions of the past, all in an attempt to make us better engineers, but looking at this site I can't help but think that seeing all of this "how to" limits our ability to see our own solutions.
While I am a big fan of safety, I also think that so many of our laws and regulations, enacted with the best of intentions to protect up from ourselves, instill a certain sense of fear that limits our ability to take risks. This fear goes beyond a fear for our physical well being. As a teacher I see repeatedly, year after year, the hesitation students have to 'guess and check'. There is an ingrained fear of mistakes. (how appropriate... the song that is currently playing has lyrics that say "you are too scared to try...") And year after year, my frustration level with students who resort to the apparent safety of "I can't" rises to point that always ends with a plaintive "just try SOMETHING" from me...
AfriGadget.com is clear evidence that if you just try SOMETHING, you can usually find a solution to the problem at hand. It may not be the most efficient. It may not be sleek and stylish, but it gets the job done, and in the end that's all that matters.
