Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

This post was a comment on MAK post: UEvoke? WHATS GOING ON??
In a fact it's a second part of my post Act, Reflect & Improve, so I decided I post it also on my blog.

As a psychologist, with another degree in sociology and social work I like to think that I know something about human nature and group dynamics.

So here is my interpretation what's happening on EVOKE.

You attract a group of people to play one game. They start to work on missions and very soon it
becomes clear that you have to be quite clever and creative to be successful. Top leaders (if we see the leader board or not we still know who they are) are indeed mostly very intelligent people and their influence on the network is huge.

The long tail (meaning all the 70% or even more other agents) don’t really have an impact on EVOKE climate. Top leaders with their influential posts determine which are the
important topics on EVOKE … they are in a way the real designers of EVOKE
SOCIAL REALITY
.

When having clever and creative people on board, it’s great when you want to produce social innovations, however dealing with intelligent people otherwise can be quite hard, because they are usually not the obedient ones. Few of them are also not very polite, in fact sometimes quite rude, but they are smart enough to make strong alliances on the network.

So when a sometimes (or often) rude, however informally very powerful agents is expelled from the game, this can result in a chain of events.

In a way it is very understandable that admins kicked off the game somebody who is rude. However, I don’t think something which is understandable is also necessarily a smart decision.

I believe and this is already showing that decisions like this can result in a rapid de-motivation of other brilliant agents whose contribution to EVOKE is very important. Agents are losing their SPARKS … I bet I’m not the only one who sees this.

So the real question is – what is a smaller sacrifice? Admis firmly decided that they are not changing their position – who is kicked off the EVOKE, should stay off. However how big
consequences can have this decision on EVOKE social reality ? How many good agents will loose their passion to contribute content after this? Will agents still trust the network? Can EVOKE easily affords to lose some of the best agents?

Well, some food for thought…

Your argument is compelling Stefano. Unfortunately I suffer from a mental condition called "eternal optimism" which sometimes means I find myself feeling totally dejected and disappointed by people and situations (normally people actually!). Mostly though it allows me to think that anything is possible if I want it enough. Yes, this is ridiculously naive, and I also recognise that I am lucky enough to have the agency and social capital to affect positive change in my life. So from my simplistic, polarised view of the world I see things like this - do we work with what we have here which is an imperfect yet bold and exciting experiment, with honest, true and good objectives or do we just walk away from it. Personally I still see amazing people sharing and discovering wonderful things in EVOKE. I'm here for the duration.

Good for you, Simon.
It might be because I'm so embittered right now, or maybe because I'm feeling I've been even more naive than you say you are, while believing into this that much and from the beginning, but I'm not that positive at the moment.
I still appreciate and admire what people are doing here. I think they should keep on. I just have the feeling that rules have changed (or have been unveiled) and I'm not fitting with them, anymore.
I didn't say I'll leave EVOKE, not immediately. I'll just won't pour all my energies as I did before, until I'll have a sign something changed. I'm sorry. I'm really very sorry.

@Turil : you're right; if I can't feel love for the project, I won't be able to help the community grow; I'll take a step back and leave you grow in peace

Well Simon, I guess Ste is one of those brilliant agents I'm talking about ...
... I'm sure it won't be an easy one to lit those sparks again ...
Comment by Wintermute on March 31, 2010 at 2:44pm
Sure it will. The EVOKE network is too strong to be rattled by an issue like this. Lit the spark again--it is time to move on.

@Wintermute: I believe clearing things out before moving forward is more the case here.
Regaining trust is the first step, then brainstorming and sharing knowledge again will be easy.

Thanks for the post Elastika. I think your comment on intelligent people working together is insightful - the phrase "herding cats" comes to mind. I have been sort of following the drama, mainly to see where not to step and fall into a pile of manure. I find it heartening that there are folks here that are not letting a couple of folks dim their spark. I also find it really disturbing that a player may have sent threatening emails to Jane's personal email account over his banning. To me, that is unacceptable and crosses a line. That player is no longer playing a game.

But to get back to your post, how might we bring in conversation from those who are not on the leader board? I believe this requires us all to seek out new players, link blogs and other evidence posts, and well, collaborate. :)

Let's move on. If people want drama they can watch telenovelas or read tabloids in the line at grocery checkouts.

@ Elastika--your absolutely right, we need a little closure before we can more on.

I wrote a post to Stefano that I though might aid the community, you can check it out here. It's not about power votes, and I'm not going to spam it--but I'd like it if you gave it a look.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
