Ethanol is already part of our automotive fuel mix, and could replace our current fuel system relatively easily. Ethanol is produced by various biological processes and is currently made mainly from corn and sugar cane. The the project's green credentials and sustainability are obvious (think carbon capture), unfortunately, these production processes have a significant impact upon global food security.
However, new technologies are coming into play that could drastically reduce this impact. Algae farms, for example, produce 18 times as much bio-ethanol (or Algenol) per acre than corn. From a wider perspective, this could be a real, practical alternative to solar panel technology. And it could be more efficient. The sugars produced by the Algae could be burnt directly, and not have to be fermented into ethanol. The heat produced could power a steam-turbine, and provide MWs of power. All of this using existing technology.
