Something that I use every day, being a student, is public transportation to get me to my required destination. Every morning I ride the subway or the bus to get home, or ride it home in the afternoon. Even though the city of New York and the MTA are pushing for cleaner ways to power the trains, it seems like it never happens. I see the electricity powered buses and the smart cars, but the subway, which almost every citizen of the city has ridden on at least once, never seems to be updated with a greener city in mind. I know that the trains run on the power of batteries and the electricity of the third rail, but it could really use a boost.
There are cleaner ways to produce the energy to keep the trains going all day and all night. The electricity doesn't need to be the only way to keep them moving. Large rechargeable batteries could be installed that would charge while the trains run on electricity so that the trains could run on battery power for a portion of the day. Another way the subways could be improved would to send everybody an updated schedule of all of the running trains so there wouldn't have to be as many delays and the doors wouldn't have to keep opening up when people stick their hands and feet in the doors to get on the trains. Because people try to get on the trains while the doors are closing they force the trains to keep opening again and again, which wastes energy and delays the trains.
If these little things were added to all of the trains in NYC, then all of them could run a little bit more efficiently and save electricity to power the city.
