A crash course in changing the world.
Here in Romania, the main drivers of local food security, as i see it, are local farmers. The situation isn't pink.
Factors:
- population consumes very much imported foods.
- local agriculture is not supported as it should be.
- there were many EU funds for the development of agriculture that weren't spent wisely.
- the results of the supposedly increase in agriculture technology [by funds absorbtion] is not seen.
- competition from the imported foods makes local farmers have a harder life making a living from their work.
- even if hypermarkets buy from local farmers, the price of the goods bought from the farmers and the price on the shelf differs greatly.
- even if there are some local markets where local farmers sell their goods directly to the population, these markets are discredited by massmedia.
For the 2020 Strategy, which was another subject approached during the meeting, the Romanian Minister of of Agriculture and Rural Development highlighted the multi-functional role of agriculture in ensuring food security amid a growing need for food (across the EU and globally).
He also advocated the importance of the social dimension of agriculture through its significant contribution to workforce employment in rural areas and its ensuring a fair living standard for the farmers and the preservation of the environment by its contribution to climate change mitigation.
