I chose the
Barefoot College from the
KIVU-List. It is an Non-governmental organization founded in 1972. This school aims to rediscover and use the indigenous knowledge, skills and wisdom to solve the local problems and to make the poor and unschooled people more independent form outside. The idea goes back to Mahatma Gandhi.
Other than traditional colleges it is not focused on getting certificates and formal degrees. The pupils are taught learning by doing what they need for their life. Important topics are drinking water, female education, health and sanitation, electricity and power, social awareness and the conservation of ecological systems.
The school is located in
Tiloniya, Rajasthan and serves a population of over 125,000 people with over 400 non-formal qualified staff members. But the activities are not limited to the district of Rajasthan. For example the Barefoot College, which electric power supply is completely based on solar power, is teaching african women to build up solar power systems in their local villages(

It shows that recalling rural traditional knowlege can be an important element for solving problems especially in poor less developed regions.
