A crash course in changing the world.
I was involved in a programme with PRADAN, an NGO of eastern India. We had jointly organized some capacity building programmes. Those gave me an insight that capacity building for farmers is really really tough. Earlier we used to have mainly classroom lectures for farmers and in one day we intended to give them the universe in one day touching several topics by different experts. Then we had a particular capacity building programme of nutrient management in plants where PRADAN was also involved. They started with role play for demonstrating the role of primary, secondary and micronutrients and then with fertilizer bags where the nutrient contents were written for different fertilizers, followed by presentation of deficiency symptoms through PPT presentation and encouraging them to recall the same deficiency in their field if any, followed field visit and identification of deficiency symptoms. In the afternoon, farmers were divided in separate groups for jotting down the leanings and ultimately group-wise presentation and correction by other groups by farmers about their learning which were doc**ented. Wh*** day was required for this exercise and then only farmers could comprehend what we wanted to impart them. I know many in this forum will be engaged in capacity building in future too. I hope this local learning will be useful.
