I'm partnering with Changemakers, who participates in a variety of humanitarian efforts across the country.
One project for change involved a group that carried out a project through community members from a settlement in Lilongwe. They'd gone to a small village (Embangweni) and discovered ecological sanitation units. These folks were impressed withwhat they saw and noted that their major challenge was that of space as their plots were becoming smaller and smaller with all the filled pit latrines and rental houses.
When they came back they started mobiolizing their resources towards the loan for their toilets and also learning on how to construct their own (toilets).
Currently the group is constructing the market sanitation unit and the first batch of household ecosan units are under construction. As the communities are already linked, five other groups within the city of Lilongwe have begun saving towards their toilets, learning how to construct skyloos; this is spreading to other cities, as well
It is the low income women entreprenuers that are driving the sanitation and solid waste management iniitiative as a viable source of income.
This entry was selected as a finalist in the "Tapping Local Innovation: Unclogging the Water and Sanitation Crisis" competition.
One individual woman began mobilizing other women in Malawai in 2003, with a goal and focus on empowering them to be also drivers of change. As a result, the poor women have received special recognition and as a result of their efforts, have been celebrated with small victories. This action has triggered even more people to take action.
I have partnered with Changemakers, and for starters have shared their victories on Facebook.
