A crash course in changing the world.
New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management is well known in the community. They have been warning us to be prepared for as long as I can remember in school and on television... Maybe that's why we are so easily able to dismiss their message. They are always telling us to stay prepared so people take it for granted.
This was proven with the Tsunami warnings last year when people blatantly ignored warnings to stay away from beaches. There was no Tsunami but the Ministry is very worried that if there was a crisis we may end up having to save these ignorant people.
I know for a fact that not everyone has a plan or food supplies for when there is a natural disaster, even though Civil Defence has been telling us that this is highly important because we need to be able to look after ourselves for up to 3 days after the initial event. I'm not sure if everyone is aware that they are meant to rip the cover off the Yellow Pages - phone number directory - and place it on their letter box to let officials know that people at that house have left and not to waste their time looking for people there.
My mission is to make sure the people in my family (who know just like everyone else about these warnings from Civil Defence) are actually prepared incase of a disaster. I will make sure we have food supplies and clothes, plus sleeping gear stored together so we can leave quickly if need be. Plus we will make a plan of where to meet if we are not at home when the disaster hits.
As well as helping my family prepare properly (following Civil Defence guidlines), I will check that my neighbours and grandparents do the same. I understand that everyone knows about the resilience strategies in my area but whether or not they are acting on these strategies is another issue, they think that these disasters will never affect them... I want to try bring reason to the people around me - hopefully by starting with those close to me the reality of the dangers will spread to the wider community.
