A crash course in changing the world.
I picked the study about coastal zone management at kung krabaen bay in eastern Thailand. At kung krabean bay there are very rare coastal woodlands, mangrove forests and coastal forests. Since 1981 the Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development Study Center tries to find ways to help the people who life there and to save the precious nature at the same time. Mangrove forests are naturaly rare because they only exist in areas that provide the correct conditions. The main thing they did to protect the forests is to give the fishers and farmers certain areas where they can freely fish and farm, while haveing other areas only for mangrove afforestation. All the farmers and fishers that live and work there have to participate in the mangrove afforestation. Confincing the people that live there to do this important work was also one of the main and most hardest things to do for the study center.
Today when you visit the kung krabaen bay area, you might see Rhizophora tree saplings planted in straight lines. Rhizophora is one of the pioneer plant species in this ecosystem and as the saplings mature, they help buffer the coastline against erosion and expand the suitable environment for the creatures living in the mangrove forests, which will help the farmers and fishers in getting a better harvest in the future.
The magrove forests also draw tourists. The additional money they can earn from tourism is another motivating factor for locals to help preserve the forests.
