A crash course in changing the world.
Out of the five secrets of crisis communication, I feel that coming to terms with uncertainty is the most surprising and important. As a budding journalist, I am oftentimes met with article subjects that I'm not familiar with. If I were covering a breakout of influenza viruses as suggested in the example, I wouldn't know where to begin. Similarly, I would be scared to report incorrectly or insufficiently because I was uncertain about the subject matter. But as the Nieman Guide suggests, if we journalists aggregate information from a wide breadth of sources such as scientists, health officials and other science-oriented journalists, we should be able to thwart uncertainty and cover our topics intelligently.
