I was familiar with the concept of local or community currencies before this mission and in fact had proposed that my struggling city adopt this practice. The catch for making this work, I think, is to have a catchy name. "
Ithaca Hours" was the first community to do it ("the oldest and largest of the local currencies in the USA"), and one in my home state of Massachusetts has "BerkShares" (in the Berkshire Mountains). I have
other article links regarding this topic collected at my social bookmarking site delicious.
So my proposal for Haverhill, MA is to have HaverBillies. The "Haver Hillies" is the local mascot/name of the high school football team. So "HaverBillies" piggy-backs on this and puns on an existing word that circulates in the community. I intend to approach the Economic Development office with this idea again in the near future.
