A crash course in changing the world.
Community Food Security is about making healthy food accessible to all, including low-income people. It is also about empowering diverse people to work together to create positive changes in the food system and their communities. A few examples of community food security programs and initiatives are: Community Supported Agriculture, Farmers Markets, Community Gardens, Farm to Cafeteria Initiatives, Community Food A****sments, Community Economic Development, and Youth Programs. I believe that all of these efforts will make a significant impact on underprivileged communities in the United States. Two efforts that I found especially interesting were the Community Gardens and Farm to Cafeteria programs. Basically to summarize both, Community Gardens are
Community gardens are places where neighbors gather to grow food and
plants together. The gardens provide fresh produce, urban greening and an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other and improve their community. Farm to Cafeteria programs focus on creating direct links between growers and different institutions such as schools, colleges, etc. The goal is to increase the amount of fresh, locally or regionally grown products used in the cafeterias, and to provide a reliable source of income for family farms. It is a win-win opportunity for both the producers and the consumers.
