A crash course in changing the world.
I found a brief synopsis through cbnrm.net about Botswana and what is going on there concerning the management and conservation resources. They are following the examples of countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, and places in Southern Africa. Botswana is recognizing the need for rural communities to be in the decision making process that pertains to the management and conservation of their own natural resources. It is important that the men and women who depend on their surrounding resources to survive have control over the management and utilization of these resources.
Before colonialism, Botswana had developed their own local institutions that had control over resource management. These institutions had their own guidlines which determined who had access to certain resources. Over time, these practices became distorted by the state.
Recently the government of Botswana has made legislative changes that would allow the rural communities to be involved in the decision making processes that determine the utilization of their own resources. Progress has already been evident in certain communities in the form of economic and financial benefits. The communities see to it that these benefits are correctly used and invested back into their own communities. Communities have been enforcing hunting quotas, and monitoring the conditions of their natural resources so extinction, misuse, or any other damages are prevented.
The institutions that oversee these processes are democratically elected, represent the views of the community, and are accountable to the community.
