The workplace seems to be a power hungry place. In the developed world it consists of computer, printers, copiers, lights, climate control, appliances, etc. Though it seems impossible to power all of these things with the power of human energy here is a concept that would help remove the load,
I am picturing a battery type device about the size of a Nalgene water-bottle (1 liter). This device would be "plug-n-play" as far as having a universal connector or multiple connectors. It could be charged during one's commute. This could be possible by using the following modes of transportation.
Driving - Using regenerative braking, Friction Generation from a spinning wheel, or piggy-back the combustion engine.
Once you get to work you can just plug in your portable energy cell and power your computer/ work-station. Clearly this will not power an entire office, but I feel it is a start. It could also be supplemented by other devices in the office such as regenerative floor tiles and maybe even under-desk pedal stations.
Just to be able to see that you are creating power and using that same power will help us become more aware of the concept of power consumption, and become aware of our surroundings and affects on a larger scale.
