Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Corruption, international bribery...and the World Bank?

There have been some questions about who the World Bank is, and what their motives are behind UrgentEvoke. I haven't paid it much attention, as I believe that there is a lot of good coming out of the project regardless as to what THEY get out of it. For instance, I've become extremely active in learning and teaching about the things brought up by the game. On top of that, I can see that at least a few of my friends have become interested and are also spreading the word. With all that said, I was a little disturbed by what I heard about them in this video. It's a little hard to understand, but if you make it through the first half, you'll hear a little bit about what this speaker had to go through in speaking up against the World Bank and how he suggests we can all overcome such obstacles.

Additional References about World Bank
  • Strategy for Anti-Corruption - Paints a different picture of the World Bank, BUT this comes from the World Bank's website so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
  • Article about World Bank being accused of corruption in 2004. This seems to be a relatively independent source. Here is the intro describing who they are.
  • Blog with a list of accusations and responses. Seems quite unofficial, but a good way to do more investigative follow-up to find out if there is anything behind these accusations.
  • Development Marketplace - A website run by the World Bank Institute (WBI), described as a platform for debate and knowledge sharing on early stage development, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

Sarah, could you please just leave the link next time, along with your own thoughts. I don't mind people coming in my blogs to get a message out, but I think it's kind of rude to just copy paste a bunch of lyrics in a blog I've worked hard to put together.

Thank you

P.S. Moderators, please don't take action on Sarah's comment. I don't mind, and think that my comment back actually adds value to my blog. Thank you

Sarah, I apologize, I didn't realize that's why you did that. Koshy, thank you for explaining that to me.

Sarah, I'm not up to speed on new acronyms...what is (F)UD?
Comment by Nicholas Nagao on April 29, 2010 at 11:50pm
Sarah, I looked up FUD, and according to Wikipedia and other sites that came up, it's some sort of Marketing technique in which people cite "pretend" sources. I've included all of my sources in the blog....is that what you are referring to?

If you're looking into this, make sure to note that EVOKE is through the World Bank Institute, and see how the WBI and the WB are connected :) It's an important part of the puzzle and I think it makes a pretty big difference on how this project is perceived.

Keep investigating!
