Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Corruption, international bribery...and the World Bank?

There have been some questions about who the World Bank is, and what their motives are behind UrgentEvoke. I haven't paid it much attention, as I believe that there is a lot of good coming out of the project regardless as to what THEY get out of it. For instance, I've become extremely active in learning and teaching about the things brought up by the game. On top of that, I can see that at least a few of my friends have become interested and are also spreading the word. With all that said, I was a little disturbed by what I heard about them in this video. It's a little hard to understand, but if you make it through the first half, you'll hear a little bit about what this speaker had to go through in speaking up against the World Bank and how he suggests we can all overcome such obstacles.

Additional References about World Bank
  • Strategy for Anti-Corruption - Paints a different picture of the World Bank, BUT this comes from the World Bank's website so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
  • Article about World Bank being accused of corruption in 2004. This seems to be a relatively independent source. Here is the intro describing who they are.
  • Blog with a list of accusations and responses. Seems quite unofficial, but a good way to do more investigative follow-up to find out if there is anything behind these accusations.
  • Development Marketplace - A website run by the World Bank Institute (WBI), described as a platform for debate and knowledge sharing on early stage development, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

Hey everyone, just wanted to address my "grain of salt" comment. I agree that I need to consider the source for the blogs, and perhaps I should have said I took the blogs with a grain of salt, but the google results were so heavily weighted towards the World Bank's website that I'm even more suspicious. I research SEO techniques and know what a typical result page looks like when you look up a company, and I have to say the results were a bit odd to me. To me it looked a bit like a SEO campaign, which again I felt oddly about because when you lookup non-profits and such, you'll generally get a lot of supporters' websites linking to the organization. In this case I found almost nothing to back up their "good" from anyone else (not even bloggers).

Thomas & Sarah, I updated my source descriptions a bit to hopefully sound more objective. And I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but I have changed my mind a few times on this, so I certainly am not trying to make up my mind prior to doing the investigation :)

That's good! It's what I was worried about.

As for SEO: I've written SEO articles, before. They don't fool google anywhere near as well as the other search engines. See, google weights heavily toward the original source. They assume that if you search FTD, you're going to want to order flowers, not see how green their operations work. It's not a perfect method, but it is set up to get the most people to the most likely place. The reason you saw so many sources straight from the World Bank is because of this. It's still possible that they took a massive PR campaign upon themselves, but it's more likely just the case of google's trawler preferring original, corporate sites.

Thomas, I agree that they should be first in the list...but not the only one touting their projects. Do a google search on GreenPeace or Peace Corps and you'll see what I mean. Of course they come up first, but there are tons of sites that reference both the main site as well as individual projects.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
