Your objective: Describe the biggest challenge to food
security in your own local community or country -- and an
innovative solution that is already underway.
In my small, rural town of Lac la Hache, farming, except of hay, isn't a mainstream production for food. We rely on ranching of cattle. Cattle ranching provides beef for residents all through the town, as many people do not buy meat from supermarkets. A lot of the beef is sold as well throughout the province, which brings in some surplus money for many families.
Right now, hay production for cattle is decreasing, limiting food supply for ranching. This is because of droughts that are becoming more and more frequent throughout the summer months. At times we will get no rain for month or two. This not only affects hay production, but grazing for cattle as well. A solution, I imagine, would be irrigation. However, Lac La Hache is a very hilly, rough terrain area, so ditch irrigation, being the cheapest solution, is not possible.
There are no plans that are being undertaken to help this, which to me makes no sense. After all, Lac La Hache is a town built beside a
lake. How could there not be water for irrigation? Also, considering how important ranching is to us, why are initiatives being taken to solve it?
This actually has got me thinking, how could I help? What could I do to improve irrigation? I think I will actually now figure out a solution to this, and hopefully solve this problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks so much!
